MATTRELLA UMBERTO

WATERBURY — Mr. Umbert A. Mattrella, 81, died peacefully at his home on Friday, Feb. 20, 2009, embraced by his immediate family. He was the husband of Gloria Gentile Mattrella.

He was born on Sept. 30, 1927, in Bessemer, Mich., one of three sons of the late James and Emily Mattrella. He was a graduate of Crosby High School in Waterbury and Fairfield University in Fairfield with a B.S. in physics. He served in the U.S. Army in Aberdeen, Md. from 1954 to 1955.

Mr. Mattrella was an engineer with Pratt & Whitney, United Technologies and the U.S. Department of Defense in various Connecticut cities. He was a man of abiding faith and strong principles. He was a parishioner of Saint Leo the Great Church in Waterbury where he served as a eucharistic minister. He was also an active volunteer at the Saint Mary's Hospital pharmacy.

Mr. Mattrella was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. He is survived by his beloved wife of 55 years, Gloria G. Mattrella; his children, Brenda Mattrella and Karen Mattrella of Waterbury, Linda Mattrella and Christian Mattrella of New York City, N.Y, the late David Mattrella of Palm Bay, Fla.; and two granddaughters, Lauren and Alexa Vaughan, both now in college.

He spent much of his spare time with his friends, children and grandchildren, including attending their performances and sporting events. He was an avid gardener and well known for his prize-winning tomatoes. He loved to sail at Lake Quassapaug and Candlewood Lake with his children. In addition, Mr. Mattrella leaves behind several nieces and nephews as well as many other close relatives in the Waterbury area.

Arrangements: The funeral will be held 10 a.m. Monday from Chase Parkway Memorial/The Albini Family Funeral Home, 430 Chase Parkway, Waterbury, to Saint Leo the Great Church, 14 Bentwood Drive, Waterbury, for a Mass at 11 a.m. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery. Calling hour will be 9 to 10 a.m. Monday, prior to the funeral.

Le nostre radici arrivano fino alla Casa Bianca

Costacciaro David J. Tomassoni, uno degli attuali senatori democratici del quinto distretto degli Stati Uniti d'America, è originario di Costacciaro. Nipote paterno di Guido Tomassoni, nato a Costacciaro nel 1885, ed emigrato negli Stati Uniti poco prima della Grande Guerra 1915-1918, David Tomassoni è venuto al mondo a Bemidji, nel Minnesota, il 5 dicembre 1952, da entrambi i genitori italo-americani, ed è quasi sempre vissuto a Chisholmsempre nel Minnesota. Questo state senator,entrato nella politica attiva durante la elezioni del 1992, ed eletto, successivamente, al Senato degli Stati Uniti nell'anno 2000, è stato, in gioventù, nazionale italiano di hockey su ghiaccio. Il senatore democratico Tomassoni mantiene, tuttora, forti ed inalterati legami affettivi con la terra d'origine della sua famiglia, non rinnegando affatto le sue profonde e vitali radici. Sposato con tre figli, il senatore Tomassoni è tornato l'ultima volta in Italia nell'ottobre del 2001. "Sono venuto con mio fratello Riccardo e mio padre Egisto e vorrei ritornare ancora una volta, ma non ho, attualmente, la minima idea, visti i miei tanti e pressanti impegni, di quando potrò, effettivamente, farlo. La sorella [omissis] Guido Tomassoni si chiamava Valeria ed aveva sposato il noto personaggio costacciarolo Cardino Mattrella". A Costacciaro, il cognome Tomassoni, oggi scomparso, era, invece, molto diffuso, ad esempio, nel 1886, quando, come risulta dall'Elenco delle famiglie di Costacciaro, all'interno del centro storico se ne contavano diversi ceppi familiari, discendenti, essenzialmente, da Biagio, Bernardino, Gervasio e Giuseppe. Presso il vocabolo rurale "Casa Bionda" di Villa Col dé Canali risultava, inoltre, abitare nello stesso anno, un "Tomassoni Ubaldo fu Sante". Tale nome di famiglia era già chiaramente presente, all'interno dell'elenco delle famiglie appartenenti all'Università degli Uomini Originari di Costacciaro, nell'anno 1852. Il 27 marzo del 1798, 1°germinale, anno 6° repubblicano, fu riunito il consiglio comunale di Costacciaro che elesse, come Municipalisti, Angiolo e Bernardino Tomassoni. In tale periodo vivevano, sempre a Costacciaro, anche i signori Antonio, Tommaso ed il sacerdote Ubaldo Tomassoni. La forma cognominale Tomassoni dev'essere, senz'altro, più antica di quella dei Tommasoni, poichè il modello da cui deriva, cioè il nome Tomasso è, in generale, specie da noi, ben più conservativo di quello di Tommaso. Si pensi soltanto all'eremita camaldolese, patrono di Costacciaro, Beato Tomasso Grasselli da Costa San Savino (1262 - 1337).

Newport Club Cited On Closing Richard Mattrella, 54, operator of the Galaxie Club, 613 Monmouth St.,- Newport, pleaded innocent in Newport Police Court Monday of violating the city's 3 a. m. closing law. Mattrella was cited early Sunday by Newport police Sgt. Charles Ritter, .who testified that there were about 25 patrons in the club after 3 a. m. Denying this, Mattrella said that he had closed the premises a few minutes early. Judge Joseph Rolf continued the hearing until Thursday to permit testimony from police officers who assisted Ritter in making the arrest.

Quando il velivolo militare centrò il monte

COSTACCIARO ‑ La recentissima tragedia aerea dello Shuttle, con le sue "sette vite" per sempre spezzate, mi ha richiamato alla mente il racconto, tramandatosi oralmente fra gli abitanti di Costacciaro, della caduta d'un velivolo militare sul Monte Cucco. Fu il 22 maggio del 1943, alle ore 11.15 circa, cioè in piena II Guerra Mondiale, che un grande aereo militare italiano, forse un bombardiere trimotore Savoia Marchetti, in volo di trasferimento (o in missione di guerra) verso le Marche, si schiantò contro il fianco occidentale del Monte Cucco, in località "Pecore Tarmìte", a circa 1300 m s.l.m. Nel tremendo impatto, contro le pendici rocciose del monte, persero all'istante la vita tutti e cinque i giovani membri dell'equipaggio. Si chiamavano Paolo Svanini di Milano, 39enne tenente pilota, Marcello Di Gennaro di Roma, 23enne aviere scelto, Mansueto Vannacci 30enne di Roma, Carlo Muratori 25enne di Piacenza e Gemmo Basso 24enne di Budrio . Lo schianto dovette essere davvero spaventoso, se poté venire udito distintamente da tutti gli abitanti di Costacciaro, persino da quelli, che, affaccendati nei campi, si trovavano in luoghi lontanissimi dalla montagna. Chi, al momento dell'incidente; stava pascolando le pecore sul monte, udii, dapprima, il rullare cadenzato delle eliche del trimotore in avvicinamento (descritto come un lungo e monotono, e, poi, una fragorosa esplosione, simile al deflagrare d'una bomba. E tutti si precipitarono a vedere, con i propri occhi, le conseguenze della tragedia, con l'intenzione di portare soccorso. Fu un accorrere, concitato e febbrile, quello che condusse, quasi tutto il paese, a riversarsi sui prati del monte. Alcune donne, che avevano i mariti o i figli al fronte, furono, comprensibilmente, fra le prime persone ad arrivare. Una, in particolare, giunse trafelata alle "Pecore Tarmìte", perché aveva il figlio arruolato in Aeronautica, e temeva fosse proprio il suo, l'aereo appena precipitato. Rottami fumanti, anneriti, contorti e semifusi erano sparsi ovunque nel raggio di centinaia di metri quadrati, il verde prato della "Pecore Tarmìte" pareva fosse stato attraversato da un furioso incendio. Altri testimoni, affermano, poi, ché le ruote del l'aereo rotolarono senza incontrare ostacoli, fino alla località "Fossa Secca". I più poveri fra i paesani recuperarono, destinandole successivamente a vari usi, le ormai inutili lamiere contorte del rivestimento della fusoliera. Lo spettacolo più straziante, tuttavia, fu quello dei corpi smembrati e carbonizzati delle vittime, che, i costacciaroli, sgomenti, con il permesso delle autorità raccolsero pietosamente, trasferendoli, poi, quasi in processione, fino alla chiesetta di San San Rocco. Trasportate sopra improvvisate barelle (o a spalla), le salme carbonizzate furono qui sommariamente ricomposte ed allineate sul pavimento, e, tra la commozione generale, fu celebrata una prima funzione religiosa in loro suffragio. Ancora oggi, nel bosco sottostante all'area dell'impatto, si continuano sporadicamente a rinvenire parti metalliche, contorte e semifuse, del velivolo.

Euro Puletti

QUANDO IL DUCE SI FERMO' A COSTACCIARO

Costacciaro – La notizia storica, con tanto di foto, sale agli onori della cronaca, perché quasi inedita. Euro Puletti, docente e storico, ha indagato a fondo, intervistando alcuni testimoni. Un racconto documentato ed intenso, forse sconosciuto agli storici o, se conosciuto, mai evidenziato.Era un caldo pomeriggio di domenica 21 luglio 1935, Anno XIII dell’Era Fascista, quando un furibondo incendio, favorito dal vento e dall'arsura estiva, divorò, in breve tempo, il grano, l’orzo, l’avena, la paglia, il fieno ed i pagliai delle cosiddette “are” (aie) del Piedicolle di Costacciaro.L’incendio si era sviluppato, forse per una scintilla partita dalla puleggia della trebbia, nelle aie poste ai piedi di Costacciaro, oltre il Torrione (oggi via Piedicolle) ed aveva bruciato, come accennato, su di un’estensione piuttosto vasta, l’intiero raccolto del grano, dell’orzo e diversi pagliai, di paglia e fieno, oltre ad una capanna agricola, per un totale di ben 400 quintali di granaglie.Il Duce, che, d’estate, diretto verso la sua Romagna ed il Mare Adriatico, transitava spesso lungo la Flaminia, giunto in località San Rocco, fu implorato di fermarsi da un nutrito gruppo di Costacciaroli che, sciamando, invasero la sede stradale in entrambi i sensi di marcia. Fu, in particolare, il sempre ardimentoso Cardino Mattrella (classe 1901), il quale, sprezzante del pericolo cui andava certamente incontro, fermò l’autocolonna e la staffetta del Duce. Alla storica ed indimenticabile scena assistette, appena sopraggiunto da Gualdo Tadino, dove aveva da poco inaugurato la locale colonia elioterapica estiva, anche il Federale Ermanno di Marsciano.Cardino, immediatamente bloccato dai camerati fascisti, i quali pensarono subito che questi dovesse essere un pericoloso sovversivo ed un attentatore, chiese, quindi, aiuto direttamente al Duce, per i poveri contadini che avevano perduto tutto quanto il loro raccolto, dura fatica e molle sudore d’un intiero anno. Udito il toccante racconto dell’incendio e del raccolto perso, e vedute scendere, copiose, le lacrime di ben 26 fra piccoli proprietari e contadini, il Duce, descritto in abiti marinareschi, diede perentorie disposizioni per l’immediato indennizzo, che, puntuale, ed ammontante a ben seimila lire, non tardò minimamente ad arrivare in Comune e ad essere riscosso nel locale ufficio postale.Questa storia, davvero fuori dell’ordinario, mi è stata narrata da una diretta spettatrice dell’evento che, all'epoca dei fatti, non era ancora che una bambina di sette anni: Concetta Gambucci di Costacciaro, classe 1928. La famiglia di Concetta fu una di quelle, prima colpite dalla calamità e, poi, risarcite dal Duce. A documentare la sosta del Duce a Costacciaro è, poi, recentemente apparsa una foto di straordinario ed unico valore storico. L’immagine, di piccolo formato, fu scattata dal signor Callisto Mannoni di Costacciaro, poi emigrato, per lavoro, negli Stati Uniti. E, negli Stati Uniti, questa, all'apparenza, insignificante immagine rimase dimenticata in un cassetto, fino a quando, essa, non fu donata ad una tale signora Assunta che volle, così, riportarla a Costacciaro. Lo scatto mostra la facciata della bellissima casa della Signora Lilia Cavalieri, esternamente gremita di gente. Gente che appare quasi in estatica contemplazione di due automobili scoperte, e di grossa cilindrata, anch’esse cariche di persone, sulla seconda delle quali, seduto al lato destro del guidatore, si intravede Benito Mussolini, vestito in giacca nera e camicia bianca e con il capo coperto da un cappello nero. Fra le autorità presenti, il già citato Federale Ermanno di Marsciano ed il Podestà di Costacciaro Umberto Fantozzi, nonché i noti personaggi locali Cardino Mattrella, Curzio Bartoletti e Guerrino Rafoni. Il lodevolissimo Presidente del Centro Socio Culturale Onlus “Le Fonti” di Costacciaro, Signor Angelo Galli, non appena vista la foto, e compresane immediatamente l’importanza, ne ha voluto subito fare una riproduzione, esponendola, quindi, insieme ad altre interessantissime vedute d’epoca del paese, alle pareti interne del centro da lui magistralmente diretto.
