MATTRELLA UMBERTO


WATERBURY — Mr. Umbert A. Mattrella, 81, died peacefully at his home on Friday, Feb. 20, 2009, embraced by his immediate family. He was the husband of Gloria Gentile Mattrella.
He was born on Sept. 30, 1927, in Bessemer, Mich., one of three sons of the late James and Emily Mattrella. He was a graduate of Crosby High School in Waterbury and Fairfield University in Fairfield with a B.S. in physics. He served in the U.S. Army in Aberdeen, Md. from 1954 to 1955.
Mr. Mattrella was an engineer with Pratt & Whitney, United Technologies and the U.S. Department of Defense in various Connecticut cities. He was a man of abiding faith and strong principles. He was a parishioner of Saint Leo the Great Church in Waterbury where he served as a eucharistic minister. He was also an active volunteer at the Saint Mary's Hospital pharmacy.
Mr. Mattrella was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. He is survived by his beloved wife of 55 years, Gloria G. Mattrella; his children, Brenda Mattrella and Karen Mattrella of Waterbury, Linda Mattrella and Christian Mattrella of New York City, N.Y, the late David Mattrella of Palm Bay, Fla.; and two granddaughters, Lauren and Alexa Vaughan, both now in college.
He spent much of his spare time with his friends, children and grandchildren, including attending their performances and sporting events. He was an avid gardener and well known for his prize-winning tomatoes. He loved to sail at Lake Quassapaug and Candlewood Lake with his children. In addition, Mr. Mattrella leaves behind several nieces and nephews as well as many other close relatives in the Waterbury area.
Arrangements: The funeral will be held 10 a.m. Monday from Chase Parkway Memorial/The Albini Family Funeral Home, 430 Chase Parkway, Waterbury, to Saint Leo the Great Church, 14 Bentwood Drive, Waterbury, for a Mass at 11 a.m. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery. Calling hour will be 9 to 10 a.m. Monday, prior to the funeral.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Connecticut Hospice, 100 Double Beach Road, Branford 06405; (860) 674-1723;The family is grateful for the compassionate care they provided
